HALF OF THE TIME WE'RE GONE BUT WE DON'T KNOW WHERE

This is a big one...(oh, and I actually wrote it today, the 16th, rather than the 11th but it was a draft from before...not that it matters)
Ah, yes, April, the month of fools. This is a picture of what I thought was probably the last smile of mine for April as hours later reality punched me in the face. I scattered my salary across Dubai Mall like the ashes of someone you thought couldn't die fast enough into the Atlantic Sea. Kiddos, my wallet is so badly bruised that the office was in shock yesterday to see me join them in the kitchen with a cup of noodles that I pulled from my new office drawer stash - 'you finally caught on; life in Abu Dhabi is deceptively expensive. Welcome!' Hey, well at least I make broke look good with my caged stilettos, studded Zara jacket, H&M skinnies with leather knees and shameless copy of the Wang/Farrow sunglasses; cuppa noodles never looked this sexy.
To put salt on the rim and a lemon wedge on top of that, The Fox and I have been apartment hunting - yes, I know; it's way too soon. We should at least have a pregnancy scare first haha. But what can I say? For me, 2010 is all about going with my gut feeling. In fact, we visited one seriously perfect candidate last night and I have to say, it literally hurts my heart the way they go about leasing these things here. You're expected to pay the full year up front. I imagine that right now you're grabbing your pockets and wincing the way guys tense up and pass a hand near their crotch when something really bad happens to a character's penis in a movie. Maybe, since this blog is starting to gain a lot more interest, I should get you guys to sign a petition for me to get it down to at least 4 payments a year. Seal that with a kiss, et voila. I'm adorable enough to get away with it, right? We'll see; because the way I've sort of quietly nudged this topic into family dinner conversation, the parental unit is not at all pleased and I may have to take matters into my own hands.
Also, since I can't own a Mercedes G-Class Off-roader (although technically I can own anything I say I can, says my hypnotherapist) another thing I could see myself spending a small fortune on this year is a Jeep Wrangler Sport in Rescue Green, which for some reason has been conveniently presenting itself all over town these last couple weeks. I hailed one once like a cab just to see if my mind was powerful enough yet that it would stop, eject its passenger, ever so slightly recline the seat to suit and start playing Empire of the Sun. But no, not yet; my mind still has a long way to go.

No more weekly quirky nail colour applications from my lovely Filipino gal pals next door.

As if I didn't feel milked already, I now have an udder on my head; a souvenir from my brother who just made his first trip to Turkey. He's very pleased with himself too. He's going away to college soon in Canada and I felt that if I bought him an iPod nano (he's never owned an MP3 Player and we've already hit 2010) that I would get something really great back in return for my selfless act. I got udders. But I jest; I didn't expect anything major back from him; from the forces that be, maybe. Ever since I started doing hypnotherapy, I've realised something very simple about the world and the energy we share in it. Think of a revolving clothesline with clean and dirty laundry on it. The more clean clothes I put out on it to dry, the more dry, clean clothes than dirty should come back around on it to me. And if dirty laundry is coming round the bend, I don't have to pick it up; it's my choice what I decide to gather and put out. I think that's the best way to describe it.

I could probably call my life right now by the same title but no unfair moment lasts forever. Unfair is a new magazine in Abu Dhabi that's actually based in Paris, and I was thinking of sending over my CV just for the hell of it, as it's fashion and all and at the moment I write about everything from the best nurseries in the city to where you can sample camel pizza. Don't get me wrong, I love my job to bits and pieces but it would be nice to get that one step closer to the perfect scenario; and as you're probably aware, perfect scenario for me means making a living writing while being comfortably seated at one of the best tables in fashion heaven. So instead of seeking outside help to achieve this, I threw some freshly washed linens onto the clothesline. I proposed a fashion section to my editorial team and it looks like...*cue Travis Barker on the drums*...I am now head of fashion at our magazine! So much to do to prepare! So much to wear and to see worn!

What's more is I am supposed to be throwing my first sale event next month - as frequent readers may already know, I've been investing a little money into rounding up some unique and cute pieces I find on my travels (and in obscure shops around town) for my own mini business and it's been going really well. But as the deadline draws nearer, I don't think I've gathered enough for a full wine and cheese event so I may just do some wardrobe spring cleaning and sell a few items secondhand as well. A studio apartment simply won't be able to hold all this clothes anyway.

And then here's me in a magazine itself! Kind of beyond embarassing but it's funny because in the photo we can see my new Samsung Corby mobile phone which was stolen that very same day on my way home from work (I'm pretty sure this was in April too). I bought it 6 days before that. Now because my hypnotherapist has been diligently implanting positive thoughts into my mind as I sit in the deepest darkest depths of it in search of The Uber Kara, prior to sessions I would've said 'FUCK MY LIFE' or sung 'More Money, More Problems' then holed up in my room with a bottle from my parent's cabinet and put myself to sleep to some Doom Metal. But I don't believe in saying things like this anymore because believe me, it really is mind over matter and so far, despite all this, somehow my life has been going amazingly.

So what's on the agenda for today? I've already foolishly decided against Muay Thai this morning and my body (which has been very keen to become Lady Gaga's recently) is not pleased for the break in the slightest, so up next (if The Fox will take my calls) is some big beach party on another island just off Abu Dhabi. My friend the English Russian lives on a boat and so he might be taking a couple of folks over, feeding us, boozing us up and entertaining us with silly BDSM jokes first though, which the party promoters aren't! I know; I've already given myself a pat on the back for choosing the right friends!

REVENGE IS SWEET

Some sick boots from a random footwear site I stumbled upon. I'm back meddling in the pervy world and working on a big piece for Skin Two while out here (to the chagrin of my mother who called yesterday to tell me I got 1st class honours). Hooray and anyway, this is my first real decently paid freelance gig. Hopefully once this pulls through, I'll have enough money to go to the Philippines in February for my friend's wedding, and for a mini break from a dry existence back home in Abu Dhabi. I have about a month left out here, which I may need to extend, depending on this article.

Going to a gig tonight for a girl whose music video Panda has offered to produce and direct and may check my friend's acoustic set tonight at some place in Little Tokyo.

In other news, after a night at The Standard Hotel partying pooltop for my friend's birthday, I realised that when I get really drunk, usually, what happens is, a really really big ass sits on my life and shits piles all over it. So the mission is to stay relatively sober for the rest of my stay here so Panda doesn't sprout anymore greys. So I won't be buying. But if you'd like to sponsor me...

MEMOS FROM HELL, AND BABY IT'S GETTING HOTTER ALL THE TIME

I'm getting sick. Just when I thought I had escaped it, I think I got swine flu today. Today was my car boot sale with Becks. It was...scary. There are a lot of poor, grubby, ugly people in London, reaching out and just grabbing, plucking, throwing around, vilifying...We barely parked and rolled out of the car strapped in bags when they all started gathering very very quietly waiting for us to set up. Not a sound! They just stood there. And when I bent down to unzip my suitcase, they pretty much helped me do it. Everyone crouched down too, and then...GO! They didn't even give me a chance to put it on the racks. It was so gross. So scary. Also I didn't make much money because it was depressing how devalued they wanted my stuff to become. All my expensive purchases were just being whored out. I nearly cried after my big blue quilted Chanel-esque bag walked away with some Asian girl for £6.

And then at one point, Becks' bf Leo just started putting up tags on my containers saying 50p and I had to run after him yelling and ripping them off and sticking them on me instead. Then he gave me a lecture on selling to the Battersea masses, and then I agreed to have one 50p pile. More grabbing and germs later, when things were starting to pick up because I dropped the prices a tiny bit, I started throwing things across to the 50p pile every 5 minutes. I just didn't care anymore. Made a fair amount but nowhere near what I had in mind, which is why I was glad to pack up half my stuff once it hit 4:15 and take it back home to my friends who appreciated it. I was folding one of my awesome big, grandpa, tartan jumpers from Pringle and found that the label had been ripped out because someone tried to 'un-designer' it, which then left two huge holes in it at the nape. PRINGLE IS STILL STITCHED ON THE SLEEVE, YOU FUCK WAD! AND, YOU DIDN'T EVEN BUY IT???!!!!
So back home. Now things are quite calm around here. Slowly but surely, the money is presenting itself, the material lifestyle is evaporating and I'm sitting here awkwardly listless because now I actually have a stretch of time with nothing going on for a couple of days, except for the odd chore (banking, uni, groceries, clinic). This weekend was intense. Scrambling to finish 3 reviews, sorting and organizing and dumping and folding and tagging and lugging...Now what?

(LOOK! I ADDED A CHARM TO MY COFFIN BAG! AWWW!)

The last 2 weeks in London are pretty much gonna be selling, dropping off my obscene amount of fashion mags at the campus clinic like I did last year, giving a big, swift middle finger to this flat, visiting family in Cambridge and Catford, making stately wasted appearances at the two parties my two different groups of friends are throwing me, getting all bounty hunter on people's asses to get paid, and the odd champagne reception and summer ball. Yeah, there's some champagne reception for soon-to-be graduates this Thursday that I'm really only going to for the free booze and because a friend is meeting me there to buy my Skin Two Yearbook. Also I think my mom wants the picture they'll be taking for the future Kara shrine she'll start building this summer.

A bunch of us were going to go to Norfolk for a couple days and stay in my friend's old caravan on the beach getting stoned and drunk but I had to back out because there's just too much to be done in London before I go. I can't sell my shit if I'm stuck hungover for two days in a caravan on the outskirts. Plus I think our ride's brother got a girlfriend and so he's been hogging the car. I'll get in plenty of beach in California anyway, and if need be (which need won't, because I don't light up), I think I've got my weed sorted in LA. Plus it's cold here. You guys shouldn't even have beaches. Such a fucking pointless waste.

Rant over.

P.S. Becks, Leo and I stopped for a drink after the sale and ended up at West Putney Tavern and Leo came back from the loo and was like 'your name's up in the men's toilets.' So my 5-star review of their bar is up around their pub. I looked grubby as hell in my black hooded sweater with the hood up and bags under my eyes so I think the manager was just being nice when he smiled and said, 'Ah! It's a really good review.' He didn't believe I wrote it. Leo took a picture that I will send to my mummy!!!

I AM LEAVING THIS HARBOUR, GIVING URBAN A FAREWELL

So I got a little bit excited after confirmation of the Becks/Kara Yard sale collabo. Dollar signs invaded my brain and I started upsetting my room. Some shit I will be selling...
Junk jewellery
Naughty books...and the occasional influential one
Stupid drinking games
Really long Hello Kitty twist-up crayons (awesome, trust me)
Metallic pillows
Wannabe Chanel handbags
Ugly green frilly tops
boxes of foreign cigarettes
Skanky dresses

scarves, and scarves, and scarves...
...and if I can get away with it...Just kidding. Right? AM I?!

Lots and lots more shit obviously. I'm thinking all clothes items will go for a fiver (okay, some may be 10 - sorry, this is about making some money here), 2009 mags going for 50p and shit, really cool books and shit...a couple DVDs (and shit). You know the drill. Hey! Should I sell mix CDs?!

Oh and I just got this amay-hay-zing idea as well. But it's going to involve some paint and LOTS and LOTS of vodka.

WELL HERE IT COMES, HERE COMES THE NIGHT

Oldie but goodie. Ya, I've been doin' that on a Sunday night; going through old photos. Me (middle) and some friends back home at one of the most over-hyped clubs there called Zen. Intense face, yes. Force fed scotch all night. My friend is a weekend DJ there and, for some reason, visiting home again makes me a celebrity to my friends so they pretty much hook me up. Well, his free drinks card is pretty limited; hence scotch; hence this. And yes, that is my best friend's foot on the countertop.

Some things I am grateful for:

1) Having spare foreign currency in my wallet. Today my card refused to give me any money possibly due to some disturbance in the chip, said the overly informed Tube station assistance lady. Luckily I was stuck in the tourist centre of the world (Piccadilly Circus) so this very nice man behind the counter at the currency exchange totally understood when I shoved 6 US dollars under the glass and said 'Ya. I need to get home.' I laid off on the yuan, dirhams and TT dollars, thinking that a bit much, and just legged it after the next bus with the four warm pound coins in my hand. I guess HSBC missed having me come in to complain all the time. Congratulations guys, you managed to stay un-fucked for... 3 consecutive months? What number card is this I am going to have to order now? 3?

2) Finally acquiring my mom's fuck-you-I-can-have-this-if-I-want-to attitude. So I emailed up Yoga magazine again after their 'prejudiced' rejection and the editor found that impressive so I start Tuesday (I thought that only happened in movies). Panda, I am glad you find that sexy. It's a shame there's nothing we can do about that as the Atlantic Ocean and several other countries render us impossibly distanced on the bed I am imagining.

3) The fact that I didn't get so wasted last night at the Big Chill House that that wasn't my high heel shoe on top of the roof of a bus stop shelter this morning. Cinderella, a Londoner's rendition? When are you blonde drunkorexic hoes going to realise how lovely shoes and a liver are? Bleh, I haven't realised the latter yet. But anyways, point is that wasn't my shoe. I was wearing Vans. (How cool would it be if homegirl followed my blog and I was able to help her find her lone fugly shoe by calling her a blonde drunkorexic hoe?)

4) For candid acquaintances like Leo (cousin Becks' boyfriend). "Do you know how difficult it is to make someone in another country want you so bad for your skills that they feel the need to go through the laborious process of petitioning you for a work visa? Does your boyfriend know that? I don't get it. Why doesn't he just marry you? It's not like you can't get divorced straight afterwards." *shrugs*

NO MORE KEEPING MY FEET ON THE GROUND

These are my babies; bought for me in NY over summer by my mom. Thanks, mom. But I think it needs a buddy. As a grown-up who looks to Vogue for fashion guidance and hopes to work for fashion magazines very soon, I think having an extra pair of decent heels (hopefully with better walking qualities) is a good idea.

These three (taken from Jak and Jil) are a kind of heaven I don't understand. It doesn't reign above our heads but rather beneath us, on our feet. I wonder if my writing career will ever lead me in this financial direction.

Or in this one. [Office, from L to R: on sale at £50 (I might just starve myself for two days and check out these), £85, £90, £80]. I've bought things here before, but nothing that was as lasting and as timeless as I know a pair of beautiful black heels would be.

But let's take it a little loooowwweeerrrr, shall we? To where I'm at:
Matalan at £14. I know, it's teetering on trashy ground. Be honest, is it that bad? Do you think this can be pulled off? I want new shoes! But then again, I ALWAYS want new shoes...

ANYWAYS...
OF COURSE I just missed my food cut-off (I gained a little weight and started this lame eating habit involving no fizzy drinks, 10 times less alcohol than I drank before, 10 times more veg, organics and water, the gym and no eating after 9pm). yuck. I think I'll just make it worse if I follow the rules today and starve myself for the evening because all I've had was water, cinnamon tea and McVities, so I'm off to make a stir-fry.

PULLED ME OUT OF A BONDAGE AND MADE ME RENEWED INSIDE

For some reason, it takes me possibly months to go through all the new collections on Style.com, so whenever I feel the urge to view one I choose a designer on random. I got Preen; whose name I love (yeah, I dunno). These were my favourite looks, namely, those lace down trousers, that skirt, that delicate shawl number, that shredded jacket and that dress (Alexander Wang much?) It would be all the more ace though if those specifics were in black, but I would have the dress either colour, plus bright colours look awesome on dark me.

Meanwhile...

Dear XXXXXXX,

I am writing to confirm receipt of X into our bank account on 5th January 2009.

As long as tuition fees and accommodation fees have been taken care of, the excess £205.00 can be refunded to Kara.

WHOLEHEARTEDLY welcome, being the only one not on a Student Loan Scheme. And the birthday continues...

I'LL FINISH THIS SHIT THIS MONTH, DAY TEN

Those are real lyrics in this heading from C.S.S...which is awesome because I turned 20 yesterday, which was the 10th. Albeit spending an hour of the 'great' day every year since I turned 18 bawling and wriggling in bed (I'm acting like that's eons), I had a great birthday this year.

My fam took me to dinner at Sho Cho, this trendy Japanese restaurant and bar at the newly opened Shangri-La Hotel in Abu Dhabi. I don't know what it is with other regions apart from Japan and California, but everyone else just LOVES to put sushi and its tasty counterparts on a very high pedestal that's labelled 'Too Exotic for the Average Consumer' so let's just say I have the bill as a souvenir. What's also very funny about that is that the best sushi I've ever had was at this little diner-esque place in Anaheim with flourescent lighting and one little old lady who pretty much knew you by name. And, without exaggerating too much, the size of their rolls could almost easily be compared to that of a child's fist. Look at your fist. Awesome, huh?

The food at Sho Cho certainly isn't something to do back flips over or anything but I wasn't having any other cuisine for my birthday and there are like 5 Japanese restaurants in the country, so it more than did it for me. The unagi (eel) put me to bed a happy little lady that night. I was still 19 then though.

As for my actual birthday, I took whatever I could get. Knowing nearly no one out here my age but flight attendants, I let this really great Filipina girlfriend take me out and show me her side of Abu Dhabi night life. I first ended up at a comfortably weathered bar called 'Blue Bay' and, because I knew what was soon to come while walking up those steps and hearing thumpy Latin music, I ordered a beer before I found her. I. CANNOT. DANCE. Yes, sure I can keep time like nobody's business and do the occasional Shakira or some wriggly alternative, and I can grind you to the floor (I mean, come on, I'm Trinidadian. Carnival is a profession.), and I'm no stranger to moshing/headbanging, but Latin is not my shit.

But you know nice people. Nice people like to smile and chide you on and suggest RIDICULOUS things and drag you up on stage to make you learn a shaky step or two (RIDICULOUS THING!). So new guy friend Marlon did so and at first, I think he had to do a double take to make sure he wasn't dancing with a mop but then my feet sort of came to an agreement and saved me for a couple minutes. Filipinos are the nicest people in the world, you know, really, but it was a bit heart-flourishing to bow at the end of the song and look up and see a sea of them clapping for the lost little black girl. Tragic, really.

They took me to another spot called Cinnabar at the Hilton; a roomier alternative with lots of cornered seating so I took a corner and cheered them on. Good for them. Then we took a taxi to Cheers because some life savers wanted proper club music (I didn't think it was possible to have a Filipino back me up and suggest that, but I guess anything is possible with them once dancing is involved). Cheers was closed for a private event so we ended up at an overpacked place called Arkadia; live Fili band performing everything from commendable Bob Marley to 'okay-sure-why-not' Britney Spears, cheap drinks (actually free...because I'm ...hot?) and a good DJ. I smell like a burning building this morning but I had a good time.

AMAY-HAY-ZING gifts to show you later on in another post but I have a carrot cake to blow out, a suitcase to pack, an essay to polish and send off, an appointment, a souvenir list to tick off and one more day to cuddle my dog so, I'll be on my way now.

DON'T WORRY, EVERYTHING'S CLEAN, ROAD WORTHY, HUNGRY AND MEAN

I've never cared for their over-priced weirdities before, but somehow, this year, All Saints is doing it completely right! It was painful to walk around their store off Brick Lane today. The hole in my pocket widened itself just a tad more, singing my thigh in the process. Please tell me this isn't a fine specimen of things:

I also found my wedding dress there, and Panda approves! It's like a retarded parachute (the tiny image size won't do it justice so.... look, but don't touch (but, by all means, you must rotate it...and die knowing that it is mine). And..oh yeah, it's black. Of course the short one is just as gorgeous, but will have to be worn at someone else's wedding. Plus I want these gloves, this zipper wallet, this cigarette case (if I smoked..alot), and the black stained men's tshirt pictured above deserves special attention for its insane detail. I could see myself wearing it to bed and beyond, day in and day out.

And there you have an All Saints christmas wishlist. (I'm emailing my mom now about the wedding dress)
Apart from that, I am being disgusting and prep-reading/gathering quotes for an essay that's due at the end of next semester and contemplating watching 'Interview with the Vampire' while listening to 'YYYOOOUUU, YOUR SEX. IS. ON. FIREEEEE' a little too repeatedly. I would seriously go to a big summer festival just to yell this back at the band. This is going to be such a festival anthem. x
